How to set up Dial-Up Networking in Windows 95/98

Here's how you set up Windows 95 or 98 Dial-Up Networking to access the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Part 1: Making A New Dial-Up Networking Connection
 

1. Double-click on the My Computer icon in the top left corner of the screen.

2. Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking folder.

NOTE: Sometimes the My Computer window isn't large enough to display the Dial-Up Networking icon. If you don't see it at first, try scrolling the window down with the scrollbar at the right of the window.

If you still can't find it after scrolling down, you may need to install Dial-Up Networking.

3. In the next window, you should see one icon marked Make New Connection. If there are other icons in this window, skip to part 2 - Configuring your Dial-Up Networking Connection.

Don't panic if you get a window saying that you need to install a modem. Follow the modem manual supplied with your computer.

4. In the Type a name for the computer you are dialing field, put "yourisp.com".
5. In the Select a Device field, the name of your modem should be displayed. If it isn't, click on the button with the upside down triangle on it to the right of this field and you will see a list of installed modems.
6. Click on the Next button at the bottom of the window.

7. Put the phone number of yourisp.com  dialup line you will be using in the appropriate fields.

 

8. The Country Code: line should read "United States of America". If not, change it to that by clicking on the button with the upside down triangle on it to the right.
9. Click on the Next button at the bottom of the window.

10. Click on Finish at the bottom of this window, and close out any windows that you have open.

You've now created a Dial-Up Networking connection icon. Now all we need to do is configure it for use with yourisp.com.

Configuring your Dial-Up Networking Connection

1. Double-click on the My Computer icon. It will most likely be in the top left corner of your screen.

2. Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking folder.

NOTE: Sometimes the My Computer window isn't large enough to display the Dial-Up Networking icon. If you don't see it at first, try scrolling the window down with the scrollbar at the right of the window.

If you still can't find it after scrolling down, you may need to install Dial-Up Networking..

3. Click once with your right mouse button on the yourisp.com icon. A small pop-up window (pictured in step 4 below) will appear.

NOTE: If a window marked "Connect to" comes up when you try this step, you double-clicked with your right button. Close the "Connect to" window and try this step again, clicking once this time.

4. Click with your left button on Properties at the very bottom of the window.

5. Click on the Configure Modem for the Modem and set it at 38400.
5.A Click on the Server Types tab at the top of this window.

6. Make sure the Type of Dial-Up Server field reads either "PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51, Internet" (for win95 users), or "PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98" (win98 users).

If this is not selected, click on the button to the right of the field and select it.

7. Make sure that ONLY three boxes are checked. Log On To Network, Enable Software Compression, and (TCP/IP). If any of the others are checked, click on their checkbox to uncheck them.
8. Click on the TCP/IP Settings button in the lower right hand corner of the window.

9. Make sure that Server assigned IP address has a dot to the left of it. If it does not, click on the empty circle to the left of it.
10. Make sure that Server assigned name server addresses has a dot to the left of it. If it does not, click on the empty circle to the left of it.
11. All DNS and WINS fields should be blank or have zero's in them.

NOTE: Don't worry about the Primary and Secondary WINS fields.  Leave the numbers here at all 0's.

15. Make sure that the Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network checkboxes are both checked. If they're not, click on their boxes to check them.
16. Click on the OK button at the bottom of this window.

17. Click on the OK at the bottom of this window too.

This should bring you back out to your desktop.

Click on Turboisp to connect to internet.
At Dialing enter username@
yourisp.com, and password, be sure to click on save password.
